Charles H. F. Agne, now filling the important and responsible position of comptroller of Oneida county, has long been numbered among the highly honored and respected residents of Utica, his native city. His birth occurred on the 7th of September, 1879, his parents being Paul M. and Catherine J. (Lux) Agne. The mother departed this life on the 25th of June, 1920.

In the acquirement of an education Charles H. F. Agne attended the public schools of Utica and subsequently pursued a course of study in the Utica Business Institute, from which he was graduated in 1897. For a year thereafter he was employed as assistant cashier by the Barbour Asphalt Paving Company, which then gave him entire charge of the New England states and which he served most acceptably until 1904. On severing his connection therewith he returned to Utica to assume complete charge of the circulation department of the Herald-Dispatch but a year later embarked in the retail piano business on his own account, successfully conducting the enterprise until appointed deputy commissioner of public works in the city of Utica, on the 1st of January, 1912. His term expired on December 31, 1913, and Mr. Agne then took up the duties of under sheriff for Oneida county, making a splendid record in that capacity during his period of service from 1914 until 1916. In the following year he became confidential clerk to the district attorney of Oneida county, which position he retained until January 1, 1923, when he entered upon the work of his present office, having been elected county comptroller in November, 1922, for a three-year term. He was chosen for the position by a large republican majority and is making a most commendable record as a trustworthy public official, proving himself particularly well qualified for the capable discharge of his responsible duties. He was secretary of the Republican City committee in 1915 and its chairman in 1921.

In early manhood Mr. Agne was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth L. Servatius, who passed away on the 21st of November, 1920. For his second wife Mr. Agne married Miss Agnes B. McKie, daughter of James and Martha (McEwen) McKie.

In the local organizations of the Masonic fraternity Mr. Agne is well known and highly esteemed. He was raised in 1908, and demitted from Faxton Lodge No. 697, A. F. & A. M., to become secretary of Liberty Lodge No. 959, A. F. & A. M., of which he is a charter member. He also belongs to and is past thrice potent master of Yahnundasis Lodge of Perfection; is a Noble of Ziyara Temple, A. A. O. N. M. S., and also a member of its Divan; belongs to Mohawk Valley Consistory, A. A. S. R.; and is a trustee and past patron of Temple Chapter, No. 300, O. E. S. The members of Ziyara Temple seek his cooperation when planning any kind of entertainment. Mr. Agne is likewise past exalted ruler of Utica Lodge No. 33, B. P. O. E., and has membership connection with the City Club and the Masonic Club. An indefatigable and persevering worker, he carries forward to successful completion whatever he undertakes. His fellow citizens regard him as a man of sound judgment and keen discrimination and consider his opinions well worthy of their attention. His interests are thoroughly identified with those of the Mohawk valley and at all times he is ready to lend his aid and cooperation to any movement calculated to benefit this section of the country or advance its wonderful development.
